Barbarians!!!!!

I am so into barbarians right now. Not the real ones. The word comes from anyone who wasn't Roman and spoke a different language, it sounded like they were saying "bar bar". I like the fiction! Brown leather, very big ax, sword, shield, furry leather boots, big belt, leather straps, less armor that there should be.

Poltergeist

I want to talk about Poltergeist, the original not the remake. (Don't get me started on remakes) I just realized something, at the beginning of the movie, one of the fellas has just come back from a beer run.  Did he drive? No. He went on a beer run on a bike, which means to me, that he has a DUI and isn't allowed to drive. The nicer thought is that he has had a few already and is responsible enough to not get in a car. But I think the former is funnier. Not that alcoholism is funny.

If the neighborhood they built was on a graveyard. "They moved the headstones but not the bodies!"  Why is their house the only one in that neighborhood that has poltergeist activity? I have seen some small cemeteries before but they are usually old. Could it be that the house they live in was the first? Was the tree part of the cemetery? Does that tree beside the kids bedroom window have bodies in it? It looks like it! Trees have the ability to absorb stuff that it is next to. It takes a long time to absorb it but it can. I have see it with barbwire, the tree becomes apart of the fence.

Mom was awake to hear Carol Ann say "They're here." She didn't see the weird crap come out of the TV? Did the storm bring in the poltergeist activity? This doesn't even start till that storm hits. Before that storm everything was fine. After the storm though the weird stuff starts to happen. I don't know why they didn't just get the neighbor guy to go over and just sit him down and experience the weird phenomenon that is happening in the kitchen.

I love it when the ghost hunter people come. Craig T. Nelson's face is so great when the guy is explaining the phenomenon that they had experienced and Craig's character is just thinking "Huh-uh yeah, you saw a toy go across the floor really slowly, my daughter was kidnapped by our closet and now everything in that room spins."  I'd like to see that type of stuff on an episode of Ghost whatever one you watch. I wonder if they would react the same as the people in the movie. Would they be sipping tea with shaky hands?

I wonder if someone in the family could have just stayed in the room with Carol Ann if it would have taken her. Where was Carol Ann playing when she left your sight? No one says she wasn't playing, we ran out outside to save our son from getting eaten by a freakin tree and when we came back she was gone!?!? No one mentioned the tree? I think that would have been a huge subject to talk about.

When the lady is talking about ghost and how a lot of it works, I think there are subtle clues about the Reverend and the cult in the first movie. Maybe the beast is the Reverend. Those ghost that go down the stairs I think are the cult. I have seen this movie a bunch of times and I love it.

Pirate TV?

I sit there in front of the TV set going through channels like a post apocalyptic man going through the radio trying to find another human on earth. I have modified my bunny ears with copper and tin foil. Not just tin foil extra length in bunny ears but a make shift satellite. I find some color static, blues and greens and I find some reds and oranges. I mostly travel through this barren wasteland of dark and light grey static. I am looking for pirates. Pirate TV a sort of romanticized dream of people like me making TV off the back of unused analog signals.

There was a time when there were horror host. A lot of local area channels had them. The show would be late at night, it would be an old genre movie and there would be a character hosting this movie. Before the commercial break the Host would come on and make some jokes or tell facts about the last scene before the commercial would start and then they would welcome you back. This was the most popular when not everyone had a VCR, but they still were popular after. Near the end of the Horror hosting era the two I remember the most are Joe Bob Briggs and Elivra Mistress of the Dark. Anyway some of those shows would be on a network that was local and not known that well. That kind of thing is what I am looking for or would like to look for. Right now though I am just trying to see if there is anything out there in the first place.

I keep picturing something like the movie UHF that Weird Al made. Not a show filled with reruns of old TV shows but one that has it's own quirky programming. Maybe that is what they are doing with the digital channels I am about to find out. Maybe this is coming from nostalgia maybe it is coming from a part of me that wants to create weird programming. I have wanted to be a horror host at one time. I don't know. Maybe I just thought it would be cool to find something still riding on the analog ghost highway.

Why not VHS???

I watched a Documentary recently. It was about people who collect video tapes. They were talking about the time when VHS was going to DVD and how some of these tapes weren't going to be on DVD. I remember when this was happening, I had a huge collection of tapes and the thought of going to DVD sounded expensive at the time. I did go to DVD as we all did, which is why Bluray annoys me and I refuse to buy it. Anyway I thought those people on the Documentary have a great idea. There are tapes out there that haven't been put to DVD and a lot of those are classics. They may not be classics that film Critics love. But lets face it, film critics have seen more movies than most people (I am one who has seen more movies than some.) and they are jaded and they don't like the every person movie.

The every person movie is that one that probably will make a lot of money and will be loved by fans. It is also the movie that is full of cliches and if you have seen any type of movie enough you can see how the plot is going to go. But is loathed by critics, there is also some movies that is loathed by most people but a few. Those movies are still on VHS and they are loved by people who are into (What I like to call) Popcorn throwing movies (I mean those movies where you see people laugh at the campy part and throw popcorn at the screen) or Schlock or Campy. Thankfully some of them are on compilation DVDs but a lot more aren't. That is why Thrift Stores, Flea Markets, Flea Malls, yard sales etc. are gold. I love Sci-fi Fantasy and there is one thing I love about the fantasy genre and that is a quest.

Sure I could have gone online or to the bookstore and bought the Lord of the Rings books but I didn't want to do that. I wanted to go into that Thrift store and search through those books and try to find the books. They are cheaper, plus I might have found a copy of the book worth something but I did it for the thrill of the hunt. That is what is fun about trying to find something at a those places. That is what is also great about Conventions. Someone there has a copy of that wonderful b-movie you always wanted.

Nerd Quest! A search inside the self

Cosplay didn't have a name like it does today. I have been wondering "When did people start dressing up for cons? When did cons start???!" So I started doing research. It started in 1939. Science Fiction and fantasy has been a genre in book form for quite a while, like a while being the 1800's. They had Brom Stoker, Mary  Shelley, Jules Verne. People reading those books and dreaming. That means if Jules Verne wrote all of his books in the 1800's there had to have been nerdy Victorian people. Maybe they made replicas of the Time Machine or drew pictures of what Morlocks looked like in their imagination. Robert E. Howard wrote books about Conan the Barbarian these books inspiring early nerds to dream about these stories.Just unknowingly waiting for a venue to be created  so they can vent these creative creatures just growing in them.

To be continued......

New entry!                  I have some friends who have been Star Trek fans for a while. Since the mid 80's. People grow out of things or change one thing for another but some people don't some people keep loving Comics or Movies or Genre stuff and they pass it on down to their kids and it keeps going. It is natural that eventually what is known to a few grows and becomes known to many. Some people hate this, some people love it. I am of the latter. The more the merrier! The bigger it is the more people give their money to these big company who only see green(or whatever color of money you have) , the more they will produce that product. Imagine how small that first con was. 1939 most everyone in a suit, walking around looking for the book they can't get anywhere else maybe meeting a writer they like and nerding out.

This video is features some of the some of the most prominent authors in Sci-Fi Fantasy novels talking about early Conventions.

I have been watching Documentaries about fans, fans of obscure videos, VHS tapes ( I had a huge collection) and toys. I have been a huge movie geek/film geek. (the word film sounds pretentious to me and I am over being pretentious. ) I grew up in a rural (country) area so it was movies and comics I fell in love with. My parents were divorced so when I went to visit my dad he took me to comic book stores and the art museum and the city but it was movie that brought me closer to him,
